  • Knepp – one of the largest re-wilding projects in lowland Europe

Knepp is all about the wildlife. Since we embarked on our re-wilding adventure in 2000, the re-emergence of nature has been astonishing. Knepp Wildland is now a hotspot for stunning purple emperor butterflies, and a breeding ground for numerous other rare species from nightingales to turtle doves, bats to dung-beetles, fungi to water violets – as well as home to burgeoning populations of our more common species of flora and fauna.

That’s what welcomes you at our Wildland campsite – the sense not just of camping out in beautiful countryside but of being immersed in an extraordinary revival of wildlife. It’s an experience that we hope will inspire, inform and lift the spirits. Tranquil, beautifully designed, eco-friendly and surrounded by stunning wild countryside our campsite is perfect for a quiet break away from it all. Our luxury accommodation comprises hand-built Shepherd's Huts, a Yurt, a Tipi and spacious Bell Tents. Our exclusive Pitch Your Own site, in a lovely wildflower meadow on the edge of an ancient wood, has only fifteen pitches to ensure peace and privacy.

  • We have three Shepherd's Huts, each fringing the edge of ancient woodland in the heart of the Knepp Wildland Project. They are all subtly different, and hand-crafted using recycled materials and wood sourced from the Estate. The double beds have a luxury natural fibre mattress, feather duvet and four down pillows, pure Egyptian cotton bed-linen, and colourful recycled wool blankets. The ‘Hobbit’ wood-burning stoves have glass doors so you can watch the flames, with a stove-top kettle and a Bialetti coffee-maker. There is ample storage space beneath the beds for luggage. Lighting is provided by a battery hurricane lamp, two bedside reading lights, and a candle lantern. Outside, the huts have their own upcycled fire-pits and barbeque grills, with hardwood outside chairs.

We also have a Tipi, two Yurts and three Bell Tents, all furnished with king-size (5ft x 6.6ft) hand-built king-sized oak beds with luxury natural fibre mattresses, four down pillows and down duvets, pure Egyptian cotton bed linen and colourful recycled wool blankets. Each is It is furnished with quirky antique and handmade upcycled furniture. Lighting is provided by battery reading lights, two travelling battery hurricane lamps, and a two candle lanterns. The flooring is laid with coir matting and a large sheepskin rug. Outside, there are French café chairs, a table and an upcycled fire-pit and grill.

We also sell a selection of seasonal organic fruit and vegetables from the Victorian walled garden at Knepp Castle, organic free-range eggs from the campsite chickens, and a selection of homemade jams and pickles.

You can order a breakfast box from us, with our free range fresh eggs, Tamworth bacon, local artisan bread, butter and homemade marmalade. Again, please place your order well in advance.

In our shop you will also find a selection of organic beers, wines and ciders, and organic chocolate and toiletries from our tenants Cocoa Loco and Green People.

We offer vehicle-based safaris and guided walking tours. You don’t have to book on a safari to stay here but we hope you’ll be tempted to. It’s our chance to show you the extraordinary range of wildlife – from the largest to the tiniest creatures - that have returned to this hidden part of Southeast England; things that you might not notice on your own.

We’ve built stunning tree-platforms at different vantage points in the Wildland, so you can gaze out over the emerging scrub and spot our Exmoor ponies, herds of fallow, red deer, longhorn cattle or Tamworth pigs roaming about the water meadows and emerging scrub. Our safaris break for coffee and cake or, in the evening, a glass of wine, on one of these platforms, or you can rest your binoculars in our new bird hide over the lovely expanse of Knepp lake. We feel this is as close to an African safari as you get in the UK – and much cheaper too!
