A rustic treat in the heart of Devon's countryside

Travelling into the country through picturesque villages and rolling hills, the journey to Summerhill Farm Yurts takes you into the heart of Devon. A stone’s throw from Dartmoor National Park, mid-way between the rugged, ‘ship-wreckers coast’ of North Devon and the aptly named English Riveria, on the South Devon coast the spot feels remote: an idyllic backwater. In fact Summerhill Farm is only 30 minutes drive outside of Exeter, Devon’s capital city, itself just over 2 hours train ride from Paddington.

Summerhill Yurts first year of trading was in 2010 and the site enjoyed such success that business owners Ben and Alice Moseley are installing an additional yurt for the 2011 season. A working organic farm, the site currently boasts 3 yurts and a bell tent set into land with stunning panoramic views in the Devon countryside.

Each yurt has a secluded feel and is set into the landscape, accessible on foot via short sets of steps carved out of the hillside. The sites all have their own camp fire pits and barbeque places. The shared solar panelled barn not only provides visitors with additional facilities for cooking and relaxing, but its roof is also home to a solar panel system generating electricity for the farm.

Ben encourages visitors to explore the farm, seeing the herd of Red Ruby Devon cattle and meeting the hundreds of ‘Ben’s Hens’ that roam the land. For the forthcoming season Sumerhill Farm Yurts are exploring a series of workshops with a rural crafts and activities theme partnering with local trades and craftspeople. Planned workshops include woodland management and market gardening.

Being part of a farm, staying at Summerhil gives visitors the chance to sample produce as local as it comes. Teaming up with other nearbyl producers Summerhill Farm offers their visitors ‘Hampers for Glampers’ which includes locally produced bacon, eggs, milk and other organic, culinary delights.

The ethos of Summerhill Yurt Farms is evident across the site. The farm is not only organic but is entered into the Organic Entry Level Stewardship Scheme which enables Ben and Alice to protect trees, manage hedgerows and farm in way that benefits the diverse wildlife and habitats at Summerhill. Ben and Alice’s vision of sustainable, ethical farming in the 2010’s makes for an educational, inspirational stay for the newly initiated to the long-term ‘country-philes’ alike.

Many visitors to the site are returning in 2011 including a couple that hope to marry there!
